The city was founded on October 1, 1958. As of July 1, 2011, the city has an officially registered population of 116,055, with 56,296 households and a population density of 10,243.16 persons per km². The total area is 11.33 km². ==Geography== Geographically, the city lies approximately at the center of Tokyo, and is located about 20 kilometers west of Shinjuku, where Tokyo Metropolitan Government has its headquarters. It is flanked on the north and the south by two large parks. To the north is Koganei Park, which includes the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum, a branch of the Edo-Tokyo Museum located in Ryōgoku, Tokyo.
